Assignment: Create a one-page poster that explains the rules of a sport.
Reflection: One of the tasks of an instructional designer is that of conveying information. This assignment helped me pare down the sport of Dodgeball to the bare essentials, and gain an understanding of how to use a visual medium to convey information. It was difficult to do the poster without using a lot of text, and instead use graphics and images wherever possible. The implication for educators is that we need to learn how to take complex processes and distill them to their basic elements, as well as find a way of presenting those elements in a way that is simple and easy to understand. Having students do this type of activity will help them to make use of technology to create the poster (or presentation, video, etc.) while also helping them learn how to take a process and distill it down to its fundamentals. Authentic assessment is used as well, since students will be able to watch other students attempt to learn or perform the sport (or other activity). If the learners are able to adequately grasp the concepts illustrated, then the students will have been successful.
Standards Addressed: TL-III. Teaching, Learning, and the Curriculum. Educational technology leaders model, design, and disseminate plans that include methods and strategies for applying technology to maximize student learning. TL-IV. Assessment and Evaluation. Educational technology leaders communicate research on the use of technology to implement effective assessment and evaluation strategies.
