Assignment: As one of the two final projects for CIED 6183 Media Literacy, we were to create a project that allowed us to go in depth into some aspect of media literacy. I chose to create a curriculum unit consisting of several lessons involving media literacy education that could be of practical use in my own teaching.
Reflection: In making this unit I had to find a way of educating students about an aspect of media literacy while also doing it in a way that would be meaningful to them and help them make better choices regarding consumption and production of media in the future. To this end I wanted to include authentic lessons that would meet students on their level and be relevant to their own lives. One way I did this was by including the Volleyball/School Closed exercise as a way of illustrating for students that what is exciting and sensational might not always be the most relevant news for their lives. I could easily see myself doing this kind of thing in my own classroom, and even though I have not had the opportunity to do this curriculum in an actual secondary school environment I think it would be the kind of teaching plan that others would find useful.
